Nintendo to double production of Switch to 16 million units

Nintendo will double production of its new Swift console to 16 million units in response to a surge in demand.

The Switch went on sale on March 3 but didn't sit on shelves for long. Nintendo has not released any sales figures but its North American unit described the momentum behind the new device as the strongest in the company's history.

The Switch, which is designed as a home console as well as one that can be used on the go, is on a similar trajectory to the company's highly successful Wii.

Nintendo Chief Executive Tatsumi Kimishima said the company would ship two million units globally this month, but one person familiar with production said 2.5 million or more is likely.

If the Switch crosses the milestone of ten million sales in one year analysts say software producers will turn their attention to developing games that will keep users interested in the device.

The Wii had generated sales of 20 million units by the end of 2007, after its November 2006 launch.

The initial results will validate Nintendo strategy with the firm withstanding suggestions to abandon consoles and instead focus on producing games using its collection of iconic characters.

The news has reassured Nintendo and its investors after the disappointing performance of the Wii's successor, the Wii U.

Since the Switch launched Nintendo's shares have climbed 9 percent to $219.
